Frequently asked questions...

How do the online lessons work?

Online lessons will take place via Zoom. An online interactive whiteboard takes centre stage on the screen and resources are uploaded onto the whiteboard and both teacher and students can annotate in real time. The teacher will check students understanding during the lesson by using collaboration features on the online interactive whiteboard, using surveys and polls, multiple choice questions, and also use of Whiteboard.FI. The teacher has 20 years experience of teaching maths and all questions within the work-packs have been carefully chosen to gain maximum impact. Students will have plenty of opportunity during each lesson to ask the teacher questions and gain support. Lessons are recorded so that students can play back their lesson unlimited times in order to further embed their understanding.

Why do families choose online tutoring?

The rise is underpinned by the increasing number of families who are looking for access to the highest quality of tutor support. By accessing a high quality tutor online, this removes any geographical limitations, allowing you to choose a tutor to be sourced who has the right expertise for your needs. Accessing tuition online also ensures all of the hassle of travelling to and from lessons is gone. Many students prefer to have tutorials in their own home environment, saving the time and hassle of having to travel between lessons. Students can return from school and feel more relaxed in their own home; once the lesson has finished they can complete any follow up work or have their dinner without the need to travel anywhere. The online platforms used in Strategy Maths allow for effective information transfer and act as an online record, reducing the need for paper notes that are prone to being misplaced. In addition, all lessons are recorded and uploaded onto the secure student portal so that students can re-watch the lesson unlimited times.

How is my daughter kept safe online during the lesson?

The link to each meeting will only be made available in the student portal area. This is a members only area that you will be given login details for. In addition to this, students will only be admitted to each individual meeting once verification from the course leader has taken place. Students are therefore asked to join the link a few minutes before each lesson starts so that the course leader can verify each request to join the meeting. This will ensure the lesson gets off to a prompt start.

What happens if my daughter is unable to attend a lesson?

One of the big advantages of online teaching is that all lessons are recorded and uploaded onto the student portal after each lesson. This means if your daughter is unable to attend for any reason, she will be able to catch up in her own time when she is able to do so.

Do students maintain their focus online?

Concerns about distractions are often unfounded as the interactive online whiteboard used by the course leader has editing privileges which ensures students are paying attention to the right areas at the right time. Introducing a variety of mini tasks, along with quizzes and polls keeps students engaged throughout the lesson. Many students say that they find online lessons more engaging given the range of resources at the tutor’s disposal.

What about the relationship between student and tutor online?

Students say that they feel more comfortable in raising questions to the tutor through online tutoring, partly because they are in their own home environment which feels more relaxed, and partly because it is less intimidating than asking questions in person. In addition to this, as part of the monthly package, your daughter will have a weekly piece of homework assignment marked with effective and guided feedback

given which allows channels of communication to be constantly kept open between tutor and student. Each student can also access the Student Forum in the portal area, and the course leader will check any messages on a daily basis - students are encouraged to ask any questions outside of lesson using this platform! This, along with the fact your daughter will attend 2 lessons per week will mean her course leader will quickly get to identify her strengths and weaknesses.
